To Jefferson Village and Greenway Downs:
Thank you to all those who attended tonight’s Candlelight March. The board and I met after the event and I believe I speak for everyone in expressing my deep gratitude regarding the turnout. You have once again shown the exemplary strength and character of our community. We are immensely impressed. To see more than 150 residents, families, adults, and children walk through the humid dusk on a gusty, August night gave us chills of excitement. You and your neighbors demonstrated a care and concern that shined from candles and flashlights and luminary bags lit throughout the streets in support. The JVCA Board is proud to represent this neighborhood and the people living in it and will continue to work to ensure this remains an exceptional place to live. We would like to extend our appreciation to Supervisor Palchik’s office, to the Falls Church News-Press and their news network, the Greenway Downs Civic Association, and also to all our JVCA co-members for their support. Again, thank you all, be safe, and we will see you around the neighborhood! Next Thursday, August 27th the JVCA will be holding a very important event. At 8pm in Jefferson Village Park, we will gather and show our support for a dream, a dream that we will one day be judged not by the color of our skin but on the content of our character. It is our turn to demonstrate that character. We will demonstrate that our neighborhood is a place where hate has no home and our compassion for others runs deep, deeper than the fear and greed which has stained our country for too long. We know this is a difficult reality to face. That is why we choose to face it together -- hundreds of candles in the night carried by our members, our friends, all saying "I care." Please join us, your neighbors in support of the disenfranchised and oppressed, in support of yourselves as champions of a new reality: of equality and compassion and caring. Thank you and see you all Thursday! As paving continues please be mindful and aware of new stripes. The JVCA has requested a number of new crosswalks which are being added courtesy of Virginia Department of Transportation. These will not only be brighter but designate crossings from one sidewalk to the other. Hooray, safety!

And our repaving project is underway! Residents of Jefferson Village will soon be driving on (mostly) new pavement. Crews from VDOT are busy milling and laying new asphalt with work expected to take 1-2 months to complete. Please be mindful to move your vehicles per the posted signs! We are witnessing a national crisis on race. Whatever your viewpoint, this is a true opportunity to have a significant conversation on a difficult subject. Anyone from Jefferson Village (or Greenway Downs) who wants to listen, ask questions, or share is welcome to join us on Zoom. Zoom Meeting Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88587421015?pwd=MWtmTTJFUzNUdzRzM0Z2SEI1Y0phdz09 Barika Williams, a neighborhood native, has agreed to facilitate. If you join in, all we ask is you be willing to listen and to explore different viewpoints. We hope to improve our understanding of each other and build a healthier neighborhood for everyone. Thanks and see you all there. Topic: A Conversation: "How do I talk about Race and Equality to my neighbors?" Time: Sunday, June 14, 2020 7 PM EST Zoom Meeting Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88587421015?pwd=MWtmTTJFUzNUdzRzM0Z2SEI1Y0phdz09 Event Link: https://nextdoor.com/events/3609762/ Dear Residents and Members,
Over the past week we’ve watched the demonstrations and the violence with sadness as we have seen communities like ours being torn apart. It is disturbing to see ordinary people who I might know as neighbors feeling so afraid, exasperated, helpless, due to the CoViD-19 pandemic and due to institutional racism. We know these crises affect our nation’s communities unequally, but they do affect everyone. Those, like myself, who are eager to make a difference often wonder, though: How can we help? For the JVCA we believe the answer lies in our tenet to strengthen the community. Here are some of our plans: The JVCA needs your help! We are seeking members willing to join us the Board of Directors. There are no special qualifications other than a willingness to listen and to help. So if you would like to join the board, we would love to have you and will make it easy for you to contribute!
The Board meets once a month and communicates by e-mail about once a week outside of that. If you are interested, you can volunteer your own time like most of us did. Or you can nominate someone else you think would add value as a JVCA Director. Regardless, we need your help and hope we can rely on you to step up and keep our organization running!
